Term 3 Week 1 Newsletter

Welcome to Term 3
It was great to see everybody at the interviews last term. If you were unable to make it due to illness or holidays, please see me to arrange a time for early this term. We were all sad to say farewell to Jessica in Week 5 and to Youri in Week 10 last term. Both will be missed and have promised to keep in touch. Jessica has been posting comments on our class blog so we know she is still keeping an eye on our activities!
Room 19 Blog
This is an important part of the school/home communication. Thank you to everyone who filled in the survey last term. Information about class trips will be posted on the blog and there is also a link to Hector’s World about internet safety that I recommend. Have you seen the movie clips of the plays the children did last term. We would like you to post comments about what they did well and what they could work on for next time. The children are learning how to post comments and I am happy to show anyone who is unsure of the process.
Literacy
The focus for the first couple of weeks will be on poetry. Please ensure that your child’s poetry book is returned to school in their Reading Bag every day. These will be used daily to practise our presentation skills. Each child needs to select a poem of at least seven lines and learn it off by heart. The best children will represent our class at the Year 3 & 4 Poetry competition in Week 4. We will be reading plenty of poems in class but your child will need your help to choose their own poem,  and to practise presenting it. They may have an old favourite in mind already or you might like to check out some of the sites on the Poetry Tab at the top of our blog for some new poems. They can present a poem they have written if they choose.
Maths
We will be continuing with numeracy, with a bit of revision on graphs, and Mrs Brown will be focusing on geometry. We will be exploring position and transformation of shapes by reflection, rotation and translation - also called flip, turn and slide.
Inquiry Learning
The butterfly garden will be an ongoing development as weather and time permits. We aim to have it ready for the first butterflies in Spring. Our new topic is about the spirit of competition and The Olympics. Each desk group has selected a country and will earn ‘medals’ for achievement, sportsmanship and behaviour during a variety of challenges. We will keep track of the medal tally on a bar graph. Any discussion about the athletes and events that you can share with your child will be a big help to them.
The Arts
This term we have an Arts Interchange organised. Each class will get to spend the session with a different teacher from the Year 3 Team. There will be a range of activities to enjoy in visual art, music, dance and drama. We are starting off with singing.
Have a great week!
