Fundraising for School of St Judes

Thank you to everyone who donated money on our mufti day for St Judes. We raised $319.20! Well done. We have been fortunate to have had support from other communities around the world recently and it is wonderful to be able to "pass it forward" by helping others.

Beach Education Trip

Tuesday 4th December
Bus leaves at 9:00am!
Rain or shine!

Our big trip this term is to attend a beach education day at South Brighton Surf Life Saving Club. The trip will be on whatever the weather and the programme will be adjusted to suit the conditions.

This is a fun day with an important focus on learning to stay safe at the beach and in the sun. We will be traveling to the beach by bus with Room 13. The bus will be leaving school at 9:00am so please ensure your child is at school in plenty of time.

Key Learning:
  • keeping safe in the sun and at the beach
  • the need to be supervised when swimming
  • the role of the lifeguard
  • identifying features of the beach and water
  • developing confidence in the water
Children and Parent Helpers will need to bring:
  • togs and towel
  • a wetsuit if possible
  • NAMED water bottle
  • morning tea AND lunch
  • Jacket
  • Hat and sun screen
  • Warm clothing (mufti)
  • footwear suitable for the beach
Fingers crossed for some summer weather!

Focus on Fractions

We have been working with fractions in class.  Fractions are lots of fun and are used a lot in everyday life - from cutting your toast in the morning, to working out how many lollies you and your friends will get from a tube of M&Ms if you all have equal shares.

Fill in the blanks on the statements below to check how much you can remember from our learning this week;
  1. The number on the bottom is called the _________________.
  2. The number on the top is called the ____________________.
  3. The denominator tells you how many _________ the _________ is divided into.
  4. The ____________ the denominator, the ____________ the pieces.
  5. One half is written  ______________.
  6. One third is written ______________.
  7. One quarter is written ____________.
  8. One fifth is written ______________.
  9. One sixth is written ______________.
  10. 1/2 is the same as   /4 and   /6. How many others can you think of?
  11. Which is bigger 1, 1/2 or 1/5?
Need more practise? Check out the fraction games at the links below.

Mini Money Golf

What an awesome day we had at the Monster Fair on Saturday. The Mini Money Golf proved to be a  popular activity and raised a substantial amount of money for the school pool project. We are waiting on the total for the stall. Thank you to everyone you helped with running the stall - we couldn't have done it without you.

Special thanks to Sharon who was our 'advisor' on the project.

Different Currencies

Today we have looked at some money from different countries.

We noticed that;

  • The olden day money was called a shilling, it is bigger than the 10cents we have now (Chloe)
  • Charlottes brought in one pound coin that has a engraving of Queen Elizabeth II on the back and a tree on the other side (Luca)
  • One of Niamh Ms coins was a triangle - it comes from Rarotonga (Olivia)
  • Olly's Australian $1 coin was bigger than the $2 coin (Ethan)
  • The Rarotongan $2 is also smaller than the $1
  • The Cook Islands have some unusal shaped money (Mrs D)

Road Safety Show

On Monday we had a surprise visitor arrive at school. Ronald McDonald came to talk to us about being safe around roads. Some things he reminded us about were;
  • Always wear a seatbelt in the car - make it click!
  • Remember to put a helmet on when you are biking, rollerblading or scootering.
  • Stop! Look! and Listen! before you cross the road.
  • Walk on the house side of the footpath.
  • Watch out for sneaky driveways.
  • Use the pedestrian crossings.

After morning tea we wrote a recount about the show. The purpose of a recount is to tell the reader about an event or experience. A recount has a beginning that tells the reader when, where, who and what. Then the middle has details about some of the things that happened. The ending tells the reader about how we felt about the show.

We always try to use VCOP in our writing.
V = vocabulary (be ambitious - use interesting words and phrases that have pizzazz)
O = openings (use a variety of words to start sentences)
C = connectives (words like and, because, after that)
P = punctuation (capital letters in the correct places, full stops, exclamation marks and speech marks)

Afterwards we talked about healthy eating and advertising. We are working on advertising our stall at the fair and looked at the colours and patterns that McDonalds use. How could we make our own advertising as effective as McDonalds?
